Holiday for Two- Gozo Island Travel Guide

On our second day we took the car across to the smaller island of Gozo, which is the much more traditional and religious sister of the main island Malta.

Outside every home is a statue of Mary, some were life-size, and no matter the size of the village there is always a Catholic church.

Most of the roads we drove on wound through picturesque villages, where the houses had bougainvillea flowing off their balconies and each front door was painted a different shade of turquoise. It was a photographers playground.

Our first stop was the Azure window, which we personally did not find that impressive. Call us spoiled but we both grew up on famous coastal towns that have made us harsh beach critics.  So instead of staying long, we just quickly snapped a few photos of the natural phenomenon and then drove straight down to Xlendi bay to eat fresh seafood at The Boat House.

DSC_1441 Lunch was followed by a leisurely drive along the North coast where we stopped to swim at different beaches along the way.

One of the most interesting parts of the day trip was seeing how sea salt is made. A family were sweeping salt off rocks for their father to scoop up into buckets and carry across the road into a cave. Inside the cave was a ceiling high pile of salt, which they were allowing the public to directly purchase. And boy did we, Mister C and I are now proud owners of over a kilo of sea salt.

I think if you are a beach couple who like to explore away from the crowds then this is the island for you. It is traditional and quiet yet full of water sport activities from canoeing to hiring a private boat.
